Noting that a consistently good user experience and sustainable business growth will be fundamental criteria for success in an increasingly competitive market, and with the use of its mobile and fixed broadband infrastructure reaching unprecedented levels, Virgin Media O2 successfully migrated all core traffic in its core locations across the UK to Juniper Networks transport routers capable of supporting 800G capacity.

As it embarks on its journey to offer full fiber across the UK for residential customers, strengthen its business infrastructure and merge all of its mobile users onto the O2 network, Virgin Media O2 last year, l ‘one of the largest fixed network and mobile service providers, experienced 32% traffic growth on its mobile network, 16% growth in broadband data downloads and peak traffic load of 22TB, highlighting the need for increased data capacity and flexible scalability.

As 5G and its network expansion continues, Virgin Media O2 has turned to Juniper to build a 400G-enabled and 800G-ready network to create what the technology provider has assured will be a digital foundation to the test of time for its customers.

Virgin Media O2 chose Juniper as their strategic upgrade technology partner for many reasons, including its track record as a key network provider for over 10 years with Virgin Media and O2 before their joint venture in 2021. was said to be Juniper’s ability to provide “compelling” economic data for Virgin Media O2. These include long-term investment protection through continued innovation in custom silicon by keeping pace with market demands, planned use of automation tools to help reduce operating costs, and a “favorable” total cost of ownership with a design with reduced energy consumption.

“Virgin Media O2’s stated ambition is to ‘Upgrade the UK’, bringing fast and seamless broadband and mobile services to as many homes and businesses as possible,” said Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer of Virgin Media O2.

“This requires responsible and strategic innovation and investment to create an agile network infrastructure that can simultaneously scale with our business, accommodate resource consumption, and deliver an extended lifecycle that protects our investment,” said she added. “Juniper has been a long-time technology partner, so it’s very reassuring that they have the same vision for sustainable growth, user experience, and the fundamental importance of digital enablement in our communities and economy. “

The deployment enabled Virgin Media O2 to migrate all core traffic across its six backbone sites across the UK with Juniper Networks PTX10008 Packet Transport Routers, which would be purpose-built to deliver network transformation optimized for the cloud at scale and with operational flexibility.

400G capacity is achieved through ultra-high port density, native inline MACSec encryption on all ports, coupled with a next-generation ASIC that powers a range of line cards. PTX10008 routers support 400G coherent optical transceivers (400G ZR and ZR+) without any loss in density today and are 800G capable with future upgradeability to 800G through silicon innovation and line cards in the chassis.

“Service providers face a complex set of technical and business challenges that can be contradictory, even intractable – and likely to multiply in the future – without the right approach,” noted CTO Raj Yavatkar from Juniper Networks.

“Virgin Media O2 has chosen to [deploy technology] that can reverse complexity to provide a simplified, more reliable, and more sustainable network foundation for its business… The business can embrace and accelerate the growth and evolution of services, knowing that its millions of users will continue to to be able to enjoy the best digital experiences in the future, whatever the demands of the future,” he said.
