NEEDHAM, Mass., January 25, 2023 – Global smartphone shipments fell 18.3% year-over-year to 300.3 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022 (4Q22), according to preliminary data from International Data Corporation (IDC) Quarterly Global Mobile Phone Tracker. The decline marks the largest decline ever in a single quarter and contributed to a steep decline of 11.3% for the year. 2022 ended with shipments of 1.21 billion units, which is the lowest annual shipment total since 2013 due to significantly reduced consumer demand, inflation and economic uncertainties. This difficult end of the year seriously jeopardizes the 2.8% recovery expected for 2023 with a significant downside risk for the forecasts.

“We have never seen shipments in the holiday quarter drop from the previous quarter. However, weakened demand and high inventory caused suppliers to significantly reduce shipments,” said Nabila Popal, research director on IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team. “Significant sales and promotions during the quarter contributed to depleting existing inventory rather than driving shipment growth. Suppliers are increasingly cautious in their shipments and planning while realigning their focus on profitability Even Apple, which until now has been seemingly immune, has suffered a setback in its supply chain with unscheduled shutdowns at its key factories in China. What this holiday quarter tells us is that rising l Inflation and rising macroeconomic concerns continue to dampen consumer spending even more than expected and push back any possible recovery until the very end of 2023.”

“We continue to see a decline in consumer demand as refresh rates climb beyond the past 40 months in most major markets,” said Antoine Scarsellaresearch director at IDC Quarterly Global Mobile Phone Tracker. “With 2022 down more than 11% for the year, 2023 should be a year of caution as vendors rethink their device portfolio while channels think twice about taking on excess inventory. However, on a On the upside, consumers may find even more generous trade-in offers and promotions through 2023 as the market thinks about new ways to generate upgrades and sell more devices, especially high-end models. .”
