South Davie’s wrestling team has a six-game winning streak, but coach Russell Hilton wasn’t dazed after the Tigers took their record to 8-3. He said they left something to be desired every time.

“We didn’t put on a full match,” he said.

Still, the Tigers were too much to visit Ellis on Jan. 10, winning by a comfortable 63-35 margin.

South’s pinners were Anthony Arbiaza, Elijah Tatum, Aidan Szewczyk, Laz Smith, Xander Proctor, Jayon Wright, Isaiah Leonard and David Hicks. Dreighton Lunnerman won a decision and South got two walkouts.

“We didn’t fight our best,” Hilton said. “They have tough games, but I think we should have won two or three more games.”

The Jaguars, who were in action for the first time in 27 days, earned pins from Jack Bost, Daniel Hennessey, Jacob Steelman, Allen Moxley, Elijah Chaffin and Luis Salas.

South wrestled twice the next day in Oakwood. In Game 1, the Tigers ripped West Iredell 84-24. Leighton Reavis, Lunnerman, Ivan Bustamante, Szewczyk, Smith, Leonard, Hicks and Bryan Tapia were bowling. West gave South six forfeits.

Later that night, the Tigers had their closest call on the winning streak, taking a 59-48 decision over Oakwood. Smith, Proctor and Leonard had pins, Szewczyk had a technical fall and South took six forfeits.

“We just don’t wrestle well,” Hilton said. “I was crazy about this match.”

Szewczyk and Hicks are still undefeated.

North Davie has its own winning streak. The Wildcats crushed North Carolina Leadership Academy 70-27 on January 10, and two days later overpowered visiting Ellis 72-30.

North’s pinners against Ellis were Jeremiah Hernandez, Easton Stanley, Stephen Jacobs, Javon Carter, John Evans, DJ McCaskill and Walker Matthews.

North won 13 of 18 weight classes, including wins over Isaac O’Toole (technical fall), Hank Blankenship (major decision) and Brayden Jenkins (decision). Ellis lost to Graylan Anderson, Jackson Crotts and Jaden Dillard.

The Wildcats, who are 7-2 with four straight wins, have an undefeated wrestler in the 12-0 Evans. Hernandez and Jenkins have one loss each.

Although the Jaguars (3-5) suffered their third straight loss, they got pins from Grayson Daugherty, Bost, Steelman and Moxley. Chaffin won by forfeit.
