Wireless Internet technology is perhaps one of the most important developments of the last century. It allows our smartphones, computers and navigation systems to receive data over the air. But Internet technology is not perfect. It’s subject to all kinds of interference, including competing wireless signals, solid objects, and even extreme weather conditions.

To understand wireless interference, you must first know that all transmitters, such as satellites, radios and cell towers send out ultrasonic waves which are picked up by the receiving antenna. For the best possible results, the transmitter requires an unbroken line of sight with the receiver. This is why cell towers are so tall and why satellite networks use multiple spacecraft at different points in orbit.

However, the actual conditions are rarely ideal. Signals weaken on their way to your device from dust particles in the air, trees, and even the walls of your home. Electromagnetic waves have a hard time penetrating these objects, so the signals get deflected and separate, causing disturbances like static electricity in your car stereo or loss of data on the Internet.

When data is lost, the transmitter sends it a second time, reducing your device’s download speed.

This is also why the signals weaken in bad weather. Because water, clouds, rain and fog also separate and deflect signals between source and receiver.
