COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A spokesperson for the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said Colorado holds the record for the most motor vehicle thefts in the nation.
Last week, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado Springs police issued multiple search warrants as part of an 18-month investigation into stolen vehicles, gasoline thefts and other crimes. While we don’t have many details about this investigation, CSPD tells us that the best thing to do is to be prepared so it doesn’t happen to you.
CSPD says apps like TikTok and Instagram make it easier for people to steal cars like Hyundais and Kias.
In some cases, car theft can occur even without the keys to a car. CSPD says there was a disturbing trend on social media where there was a challenge to steal vehicles.
“The trend is still up,” Robert Tornabene, senior supervisor of public communications (PIO), said of auto theft trends. “It’s slowed down a bit, but again, part of that is due to awareness. Especially about this TikTok thing that’s been going around. That social media trends have really increased the number of stolen cars.
To keep your car safe, CSPD says the most important thing you can do is lock your doors.
